Following the most recent and perhaps most far-reaching security breach to affect the healthcare industry, many major news outlets are reporting the details of Anthem's cyber-attack as an escalating event.  A continuation of the high-level incidents from last year (Target, Home Depot, Community Health...), the breadth and depth of this breach juxtaposed against the size and stature of the Anthem organization, highlights growing concerns for keeping data safe. 

An "excess of 80 million" people compromised in this incident alone. 

Anthem is the "second largest" healthcare insurer in the country. 

Discovered January 29th, this incident follows two years in which over 700 retailers were hacked. 

Cyber attacks are increasing in frequency and sophistication because criminals have made it their business to hack and steal protected data.  They are very strategic in who they target and innovative in their approach, which makes it difficult to find the right defensive tactics.  While Anthem was targeted for PHI (Protected Health Information), credit card data remains a prevalent concern for merchants and consumers.  Current security standards like PCI DSS aren't enough to keep systems secure.  Hackers have penetrated these environments, finding gaps, cracks and sometimes wide gaping holes in what appears to be a secure system.  These are innovators and brilliant, devious minds we are fighting, after all.

As a consumer, it's defeating to read headlines about millions of social security numbers being stolen, or another popular retail or business chain having been breached.  It's as if these incidents are inevitable and feels like there's nothing we can do to really protect ourselves. 

But a business or merchant must realize these new realities and take swift action.  Because it would seem then, that the best way to fight breaches and hacking is with technology that is as innovative and sophisticated as what the bad guy has.  

New initiatives like the EMV (Euro/MasterCard/Visa) "chip and pin" cards offer new options for merchants to improve the security of their payment eco-system.  These cards are being issued to consumers and merchants are incented to implement the proper equipment to accept them by October 1, 2015.  If you are not educated on the EMV Liability Shift: what it means, when it takes effect and how your business is affected, Learn More Here.

Installing new EMV card readers is one step, but more can and should be done to protect card data.  Layering EMV readers with tokenization, DUKPT (Derived Unique Key Per Transaction) and encryption techniques is more of a zone defense approach.
